There's a reason why prairie dog hunters (small traget) use a 22-250 under 45gr bullet at 300yrds for a 3" target, 300WM looks cool on paper but drops 6" more at same distance.
You don't hunt prairie dogs, you shoot them. That said, my .223 w/24" SS bull barrel makes hits at 350-400 yards consistantly, at 500 yards you need to know how to use your tool to make it work for you, but it will do the job.
