    Bulletproof 700r4? Possible?

Hey i might put a 700r4 in my car instead of a th400 for cost reasons. my engine pushes about 430 horse, and i plan on supercharging it, so transmission is gonna be an issue. can i build it up to withstand all the power or am i just better off buying the $400 torque arm and crossmember for the th400? i have 4:11 gears and want to be able to drive on the hwy so...i don't know what to do. help!

Kilpatricks builds some great trannies, they buildt my 4L60 and I am making about 600hp at the motor never had a problem, until my torque convertor blew up. Not their fault, but I would get the 400 if you can afford it, If you do keep the 700r4 I would call Kilpatricks. They have a great trannie guy there, he will give you some advice. Good Luck

It will be cheaper to spend the money to put the 400 in than it will be to build a 700........I'd do a 200R4 before a 700R4.......

im not knocking them down im just saying my tranny has been done 4 times by them not because of abuse but because of mistake. exception to the last where i dont know how u break hard parts when i do not do N drops or stupid S H I T like they were trying to blame me with. My MOM's truck has been back twice for tranny problems from a tranny they put in. other then that iv had no problems with my motor or any other things they have done. I know the tranny guy donny who is still going to school to work on trannys but ur the first thats said any thing good about the tranny work there.

Donny didn't do my tranny, It was an older guy that has been working there for quite a while I think.

UnderPSI didn't Kilpatrick's do your LS1 4L60-E twice? (not counting the converter failure) I thought it failed once at the top end of the track.

For the transmission question - this is a subject I spent a lot of the last year looking into; one way to look at it is: Strong. Streetable. Cheap. Pick any two. The answer also depends on how much power you are planning on making. A good question is how much boost are you planning on running and will you run race gas and turn up the boost? Also will you be running slicks at the track? The big torque of high boost; and the hard hit of traction are going to be the biggest factors in stressing your transmission if you ask me.

It is very common for any decent PERFORMANCE (racing) transmission shop to build a 700-R4 rated for 600HP/600TQ.. Beyond that you need a true specialist who is really a master of his trade.. I don't know of anyone capable of doing this in the area - certainly not anyone with (publicly known) proven results. Anything at this level or beyond is hit or miss and failures are common - although it is possible to have a strong tranny built. I know a small handful of cars that are running low 10s / high 9s on 700R4s behind some stout power-added Small block V8s but they are the exception and you can expect they have all the tricks ($$). I would say for a REAL good 700-R4 (all the mods, heavy Input drum mods, 5 pinion planetary gears front & rear, 4L65 parts, extra clutches, custom 3-4 clutch pack solution, etc.) you are going to need $1800-$3000 depending where you go and what kind of risk you want to take. The absolute best places in the country by reputation seem to be Rossler Transmission, and Finish Line Performance FLP (I think the website is www.flp2win.com). Jimmy's in Mundlein, IL is potentially a good shot; he offers one very reasonable in the $1500-$1800 range and his warranty is outstanding from what I heard; local GN owners keep telling me stories of him fixing their 200-R4s on weekends while they wait and under warranty Seems like a real class act.

The best result I've ever heard of is a guy I just met in Washington who has a 700R4 in a 70's heavy full weight car with a 383 SBC with a Novi2000 and 2 stages of nitrous, he dynoed 750RWHP and has ran in the 9s, he cruises the car and the tranny has been in for 3 years I recently bought the best 700-R4 I could find (other than Rossler who had limited information to look at) and I doubt I would ever have that kind of good fortune..

I agree with the other guys if you can do a 200-R4 it would be a lot cheaper and more reliable; the 200-R4 performance parts are known & proven from all the 25,000+ Grand Nationals out there, Jimmy's in IL again comes highly recommended because the 200-R4 is his forte`..

TH400 is obviously the cheapest and strongest but I don't see how you could cruise with it and 4:11 gears.

I just reread your post: when you said "using 700-R4 for cost reasons" and then you mentioned supercharging it and building it to handle it - saving money and building a 700-R4 to handle forced-induction levels of torque are two mutually exclusive things

Actually Josh I only had them repalce the 3-4 clutch pack the first time, The next time I Broke my imput shaft in half so I just had them build me the best one they could after that, which held up great untill the insides of my TCI convter let loose and filled my trannie full of metal. That kind of stuff happens when you make alot of power, you will find out some day, by that i mean when you start making power.

I sense you're looking for a race.. Possibily hoping for a better result than what you recieved last time you raced me? If you couldnt beat me from a roll and I am not "making power" then I guess you really got your work cut out for you..

Anyways I would have a good time racing ya this summer, no hard feelings win or lose. And if I lose then maybe I'll "Finally" consider "upgrading" to an LS1

Great another "free" racer. Seems to me his post got to ya a little bit. Why so defensive? And for the last time A race from a roll is not a "RACE". I know I have posted in the past about racing from a roll but my truck is not built for that reason. It is just hard to get a stoplight on the hwy. Besides that running down a quater mile dragstrip is just so much more fulfilling. Especially since most races are one or lost at the tree, and the only life at risk is usually yours(the drivers). All of this rant was computer generated using "polymatrix compudownload 2.6358" everything you read here was made up and in no way portrays actual facts or fiction.

Regardless bring everything in spring and hope ya brought enough. I can't wait to see all your ugly mugs at Oscars again.

11s is pretty fast, I've only got a stock 4.3... and my cam and head #s are in the sig. With the truck weighing 3650#, how much HP would I need to run 11s? Do you think I'd need nitrous? And if so-- will I need a nitrous-tuned MAF? I just wanted to ask someone with experience at this level of power.

    Josh,

I did hear that you went 11's once. Do you have a timeslip or video? I am not trying to be sarcastic here. I just want some clarification. We also never question that your truck is fast. I know that we never officially raced. I know what I ran and you know what you ran. What our posts are in regards to is .....how can I put this... the oddness of your posts. They personally amuse me, mainly the type of questions that you ask.

As far as how you can "run 11's" the formula is simple. Buy an LS1 powered car. add 1 procharger at 6 lbs of boost. there are a few small other items like a rearend, trans, drag radials, that would help you in your effort, but the basic power package will easily cure all of you speed fixation needs. any other ?'s
wait doh that was the recipe for 10's. umm 11's well buy one 1984 chevy full size pick up ($1200.00 )Install one TH400 trans (Free) add one 8.5 to 1 compression stock headed 500 cubic inch cadillac engine (free) Install drag radials ($150.00) Install one NOS plate kit capable of a 340 hp shot (free) Spray the truck out of the hole....oh yeah the truck has to weigh 4600 lbs for this recipe to work properly.

My point is It doesn't matter what you drive or how fast you go. j/k As long as you enjoy it. I know my truck is ugly and falling apart, but I love the thing to death. Will I ever go 12's again in the truck? prolly not. Josh build what you want to build and when someone gives you a shot or picks on you. laugh it off and pick right back. So like I said to you earlier "GET OVER IT"
You quest for knowledge of others cars might be better spent on your own. BTW how is your quest to having the first 13 second turbo grand prix coming? Wait before you answer ......it doesn't matter.

Oh Dammmm, I didn't know you had to run in the 11s to post on this board.... I've been trying for 3 years to get my little V6 in the 12s, how will I ever get it in the 11s....

Back on topic, You'll be money ahead to do the 400, any OD tranny will get expensive, you just need to figure out if you really need to overdrive. Jimmy did my 200r4 years ago, I have not had any problems at all, I take it out every 2 years and he gives it a checkup. I've got all the billet parts and a Stage Rite tranny brake, I'll bet theres $2500 in it. I know Jimmy doesn't like 700s, he was pulling them out of 4th gen Vettes and 3rd gen F-Bodys and switching to 200s, they were picking up 3 tenths in low 12 second cars. A well built 200 will hold up to 700hp, after that there just isn't enough clutch material and they cook themselfs......
