    Electrical Question

My house is early 1960's. I'm trying to wire a ceiling fan. I have two sets of black and white wires coming out of the ceiling. My fan has a three wires: white, black and orange (prolly neutral, fan and light). How would I wire this up without burning my house down.

    Thank you,

    Josh

guess and keep a fire extinguisher handy...can't say if it'll catch on fire, but you should be able to extinguish it!

If this fan is controlled by a switch .....Most Likely You are looking at

    Black-Hot
    White- Neutral
    Black-Hot feed to switch
    White- Switch Leg

But without using a tester, I could not tell you for sure.

    Good Luck!

right now are all of the outlets and the other light dead?

Do the instructions with the fan indicate what the orange is for?

My best guess would be orange and black go to the 2 blacks in your ceiling, white goes to the whites. One of the black/white pairs there goes to the switch, the other goes to the other light.

Like I said, that is best guess.

    You GIT R DONE?

Sorry I haven't checked my PM's. Umm I think you were right.

    Black-Hot
    White- Neutral
    Black-Hot feed to switch
    White- Switch Leg
I wierd thing is, when I hooked the single pole switch back in the wall, there is a black and white wire coming out there? I hooked them up and everytime I used the switch it would flip the breaker. I just capped both of them and bought a remote fan deal from home depot.

Both black wires with fan and light and the common with both the white wires and it worked.

Thank you again for the help guys!

What you need to do is determine which combo of White/Black pairs is the one that comes from the Panel (Hot and Neutral) and down to switch (Feed and Switch Leg).

How would I do that? Use 9V battery on one side and use a voltage meter on the other end to detect the charge?

    1- Pull the Fan down

2- Find the PAIRS as stated above

3- The one white (Neutral) goes to the white on the fan or Line side Neutral of the remote reciever.
The one Black (Hot) goes to the black (feed) that runs down to one side of the switch.
The one white (switch leg) goes to the black and blue of the fan or the Line side Hot of the remote reciever.

Easiest way is to use a votage tester to determine which are the HOT and Neutral. Then if you have an Ohm Meter check to see if yoou have continuity with the other black and white pair going to the switch.

BTW....I have never used the 9v batt test....but that would work.....make sure to shut down circuits first.

So once I find the pair that goes to the wall switch and the pair that goes to the breaker, then what would you want me to do with it? At one time this room was without a attached half bath. The wall switch that is in the half bath has capped off wires. This was prolly the 3 way wires for both ends of the room before they made the half bath.

That girl looks like she up to no good. Or she was the one that wired up the ceiling fan that burned down the house.
