    GR-15 Pistol Build

Well since everyone else is posting their GR-15 Builds, here is the beginning of mine. I just picked up this upper, its a 7.5" Barreled upper with a Yankee Hill Machine Diamond Carbine Length Rail. I was going to wait, but i got a pretty good deal on it. I have a PSA LPK, FDE MOE Grip, Spikes Pistol Buffer Tube Kit, Black & FDE XTM Rail Covers, BAD Lever, Norgon Ambi-Mag Catch, Noveske KX3, Novatac SPL-120 Weapon Light, And a few other parts waiting for me when i get home in a month. Hopefully ill get a chance to pick up my GR-15 in November, so i can start the build. I'm thinking of putting a Primary Arms M3 Clone on it, they have gotten pretty good reviews. Here's a Seek Preview....

Out of curiosity, how do the laws on building a rifle based pistol differ in terms of required length, etc from a normal rifle?

I believe the lower receiver is registered in WI as a "firearm" not as a pistol or a rifle, so unless theres something I don't know, at least here, its no different. If you put a buttstock and a short barrel on it you might be building something illegal... honestly I'm not too sure.

the receiver has to never been registered or built as a rifle. it can never have had a buttstock mounted to it. Also, as a pistol, it cannot have a forward vertical pistol grip or a buttstock.

Technically, nothing gets registered in WI. Nobody knows what you bought or what it was. The only quirk with receiver transfers is that you have to be 21 to buy one because it COULD be built into a pistol. But, that's an ATF rule, not a state rule. It'd be very difficult for anyone to prove what a receiver was at any given time.

So while it cannot have a forward vertical grip, can it still have one of those magpul angled fore grips?

I have seen alot of the pics on ar15.com showing that foregrip on the rifles

That's a good question. Probably one the ATF should rule on. I don't know how they distinguish the difference or what qualifiers they use to define a vertical grip.

to me it looks awesome on the pistol ar's. that foregrip couples with a CAA stock saddle makes it almost like an SBR since the CAA gives you that cheek rest

Could you gain some extra space by putting the light on one of the sides or does that throw the balance off too much? Overall i love that idea. defnitely makes me want to build one!

yea, i could but i grip it at the mag well anyways since its soo short, and i like the light on the bottom since there's no pistolgrip, i can turn it on with my knuckle.

Don't they make a shorter buffer tube now to keep it more compact?

I believe, because the carrier still has to get far enough back to strip the next round... the length of the buffer plus the carrier has to fit behind the mag-wel. without having each in my hand, I'm willing to bet there isn't room to shorten it much, if any.

Maybe you could if you used a pistol round which stripped from the front of the mag-wel?
