    Ford Oil Change

ok, every single car i have ever owned, the oil Dip Stick shows the Full mark when you Fill the oil Pan and Filter, with the Owners manual recommended oil fill.

Issue, i did my first oil change, on the 2010 F150 4.6L motor.
the Manual says, 4.6L = 6.0 Quarts oil.

ok, i drain pan completely, change filter.
Put in 6.0 quarts of oil, Start engine, check for pressure, then leaks,
Turn Engine off. On Level Ground, check oil Dip stick, and it reads 1/2 quart low.
( the oil is in the Middle of Cross-Hatch & Holes, showing 1/2 quart low).

so i add 1/2 quart, (6.5 quarts), and it is on the full mark.

    IS THIS A FORD-ism?????

I've always found that dipsticks aren't necessarily precision measuring devices...it's not too uncommon to see that they've got a "safe" margin of error by indicating less than you've actually got.

Some manuals will give you a capacity with and without filter, and I'll base how much I put in on what that says. Then I'll make a mental image of what the mark on the dipstick shows after it's run and then has sat for a few minutes. It's always on the low-side of "safe" for my cars.

some engines require you wait for X amount of minutes before checking the level to allow for oil to drain out of the heads.

i used the Motorcraft 820 filter, standard filter that comes on the truck new.
i'd say it holds about a 1/2 quart.

ya, this manual only has One Capacity rating,
    oil capacity 4.6L = 6.0 quarts.

doesn't say, with or without filter.

    THANKS
