Did you hook back up any/all ground straps? Not sure of the ground strap locations though I owned one, but that's the first thing that comes to mind.

Only thing that we disconnected we plugged back in. I'll take a look when I get back home to see if there's is something I'm not seeing.

Is it a 4.0? did you put the belt on backwards, it fits on 2 different ways. Or is something else locked up? Did you try starting it without the belt on??

Yes its the 4.0 and I think the belt is on right. I followed the chart under the hood. Is it safe to start it without the belt? I don't wanna wreck something else. I turned the bottom pulley with a wrench and all of them turned.

You can start without the belt...wouldn't run it too long since your water pump runs off the serpentine belt though.

Did you get the starter off yet? Try jump starting it?

I tried jumping it first. Gonna take starter off tomorrow but see if it starts without the belt first.

Before you go taking off the starter, put it in neutral and try to start it and or try to move it a foot or so. The neutral safety switch are notorious on the xj's. Mine acts up I would say 20% of the time, just to lazy to clean it and to cheap to buy one(250.00+)........OR try cleaning your battery posts, another common issue for not starting.

Ps my nss just happened one day

Wont start or wont crank ? Lil difference there for those in Rio Linda.
I was gonna throw CPS out there but this sounds like a no crank scenario and not a no start scenario.

Well if it's clicking when moving the key then I'd think that would rule out the nss? I know in my buddies it wouldn't do anything when the nss would act up. Key forward and nothing just silence.

No cracking. Just a single click every time the key is turned.

Probably time for a new starter...fwiw, I've noticed many of the starters tend to last 8-10 years or so with the jeeps I've had.

So took the starter off. It tested fine. Next checked connection to battery, probably the first thing I should have checked. Turned out to be a bad connection. Fixed that and the car fired right up.

Glad it was a easy fix, like I said earlier the batteries connections are a common problem. I clean mine about once a year to prevent stuff like this.
