    Metal Bands?

Do you consider groups like Poison, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Twisted sister, Kiss, and so on... to be 'Metal Bands'?

I was watching VH1'S "Top 10 Metal Bands" and when Poison, Motley Crew, and Kiss came in @ 10, 9, & 8 I though to myself "WTF" and quickly switched the channel. I think calling bands along those lines metal bands is a pretty far stretch. Hard Rock band or Hair Band sure....but Heavy Metal????

Then there were the weird, grey area bands that didn't fit anywhere......like WASP, too heavy/crude to be "hair metal," and King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Accept, etc......Damn, I love those bands........I SOOO miss the 80's........

    As I Lay Dying
    A Day To Remember
    Heaven Shall Burn
    Sea Of Treachery

Those are what my age range consider metal.

I hated the "bubblegum pop-metal," like Poison, Firehouse, Trixter.......that stuff just made me gag. I always gravitated to the "swords and sorcery" metal, like Dio, King Diamond, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen.....Anything that had a feel of the arcane to it. I played bass guitar with a death metal band years back, and some of the sh*t that went on in those days......ah, memories, lol.........

    Good stuff
Heavy metal story: breaking the boundaries of speed and sound

The first heavy metal bands, such as 'Accept', 'Dio', 'Iron Maiden', 'Manowar' and 'Metallica' originated in the early 80s. Many of them are already classics, some are still making music and releasing successful albums. The early 80s were the period of classic metal notable for classical music influence and anthemic choruses and characterized by the bands like 'Accept' and 'Iron Maiden'.

During the 80s period new subgenres went emerging, including black metal, death metal, thrash metal, and others. Many bands embarked on a heavier sound and even further increase in tempo. Among the experimenters was the San Francisco quartet 'Metallica'. Today they are considered the pioneers of thrash metal and one of the most innovative metal bands ever.

Since the release of their debut album 'Kill 'Em All' in 1983, 'Metallica' were head and shoulders above all pretenders to the throne of thrash metal selling more than 200 million albums. Their album 'Metallica' released in 1991 became the best-selling metal album having sold over 8 million copies in the US and 7 million in other countries.

That album was the demise of Metallica, nothing metal about it.

    It was a pop album.

And it sounds like shit :P - saw BMtH with Thursday the other week, and it was just gutteral throaty screaming, couldn't understand a word he was saying.
Those are more death/black metal, than metal, I think.

The 2nd wave of metal after the 80's, were bands like the deftones, KoRn, coal chamber, sevendust, chevelle, reveille, kittie, godsmack, slipknot, disturbed, etc.

Nowadays, i'd say the "emo" bands are closer to metal than anything else, like Senses Fail, The Used, Alexisonfire, Thrice, Underĝath, Avenged Sevenfold, Finch, Silverstein, My Chemical Romance, Emanuel, Chiodos, etc.

I enjoy the music I listen to. Most people wouldn't on here, and I wouldn't expect you guys to. Yeah a lot of the time its hard to understand what they are saying, most of the time I can make out most of it. I have looked up lyrics before, but I love the "new" metal.
