    Hydraulic roller lifter questions

In a few weeks I am going to being doing some work on my truck(new ignition parts, new timing gears and chain, replace leaking intake gaskets... and general tune up stuff) So I was reading stuff on the truck forums and alot of them mention that the common failure point of the vortec 454 is around 200-300k miles the lifters wear out, turn in the retainers and wipe lobes off the cam.

I looked at just replacing the lifters while I have everything apart but thats pretty pricy and I didn't really plan for it.

So can I just look at the lifters an tell if they are going bad? What should I all look for?

Also I found stock remanufactured lifters on ebay for about half the price of new ones, any thoughts on these? worth the money or just junk?
