I have a bunch of stuff in my basement right now...

a used (for about one year) Antec Solo case... very nice finish

    http://www.antec.com/usa/productDeta...n=us&id=18500#

a used beige Antec Performance Tower case (full tower).

    Similar to this one:

    http://www.virtual-hideout.net/revie...0b/index.shtml

Let's see... a new in the box black Antec 4480B case

a used Thermaltake Big Typhoon Cooler.

    http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1148&ID=1554

    a used Intel Core 2 Duo E6350 (1.86GHz,

I also have some motherboards... I have an ASUS P5WDH motherboard (intel 975X-based) however... I have to make sure that I can transfer my RAID-5 setup over to a new motherboard before I part with that one. It for sure will handle Quad Core.

Then I have an Intel 915 board that was designed around the time the Pentium Ds came out, but should work for some of the Core 2 Duos (probably won't work with a quad core though).

I have some memory too... 2 GB PNY DDR2 533 and some Kingston Hyper-X DDR2... not sure if it's 1 or 2 Gigs though. When I get home tomorrow I'll see what else I have.

I've got an iWill dual Opteron(socket 940) motherboard with PCI express slot. It's pretty much brand new, just used for testing. You can pick up a used pair of Opterons and RAM for dirt cheap on ebay since there isn't much of a market for them. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get specs and figure out a price.

remember this is a price sensitive build so even it if has an inch of dust on it and it works thats what I'm interrested in. I'm looking to do this out of used parts for under $200.

I just need a new gaming rig to get me by.

    Thanks

If he don't buy it then can I?

I made the mistake of getting my kids a laptop.. Who woulda thunk that a 1 1/2 year old would have picked some of the keys off the keyboard.. Now can't type on it to go to web sites.. Money well spent I guess..

I was looking, and there are options, if anything I'd just build as you go... i.e. buy a new mobo, swap stuff over....... when money allows, upgrade the processor, then later the ram, etc.

all in all I'm looking to do the same and was just looking at actual costs. -- It would cost me about $375 to "build up" my computer to be pretty kick ass. All in all that tells me that if you were to go "cheap" you could start to build for $180 for a new MOBO and Processor as a start, then transfer what you can over. For me then I'd be adding on faster ram, a DVD-R drive, more HDD capacity, higher wattage power supply, etc. Plus then my video card would have it's "own" connector for power, instead of using one of the connectors for everything else. I still have combo IDE and SATA stuff, and no doubt I'd want to switch it to be all SATA.

That being said, you can at least get the important stuff for under $200 to start.

Coop, I wouldn't mind seeing what you have laying around, but I'd feel bad just gutting a computer for parts, and if it doesn't have PCI-X it's gotta be pretty old.

Yeah, I just got done upgrading 3 of my machines for the wife/kids and building a whole new system for myself... Coulda waited a bit, but with AMD systems being so cheap to put together now-a-days, why not...

Spent more than I was expecting, but now my son has a AM2 X2 5400+ system running at 3.25GHz, dual 8800GT video cards in SLI on a 590 SLI chipset motherboard and 4gb of DDR2 running at 1000MHz with 5-5-5-18 timings and a new WD Caviar Black 640GB drive with a 1680x1050 22" LCD... Not a bad system for a 11 yr/old...

Damn thing can actually perform better on some things than MY new system (Phenom 9950BE @ 2.9GHz, 4GB DDR2@1066, GTX280 1GB, WD Caviar Black 640gb/1tb drives, 24" 1920x1200 LCD), except the GTX280 does do better at 1920x1200 and above resolutions, but at lower resolutions his system pulls higher framerates...

He has been getting into Command & Conquer Kane's Wrath pretty good, so I figure I would get him C&C Red Alert 3 for christmas... Oh, and his 'new' system is also a Christmas/Birthday present for him as well... Built the whole thing for like $450-$500...

Nice thing about the way I have it setup for him is that he is now setup in my 'workcenter', so any time he isn't using it I can utilize it as a secondary workstation as well...
