If you do the math, it is entirely possible. At a race weight of 3850 lbs, that car, if set up correctly, would require a peak horsepower of about 784hp. We'll just assume 800 horsepower would do the trick. A standard 23 degree small block can pump out 650 horsepower, put a 200 shot on it and there you are. You should have more than enough power to get in the 9 second club.

    9 seconds ................the right way

Any average Joe can get to that elusive number. The key is using your common sense, and building something that is a solid foundation---and will stay together at those power levels for a good period of time.

I prefer to use a Big Block. Assuming 1.5 horsepower per cube, a small block is just not as good of a choice at the budget level. You should always build the biggest engine that your dollar will buy. The most important item in any Big Block buildup, assuming that the shortblock is solid, is definitely the camshaft. I design and have my own custom billet roller camshafts ground. I have tried many of my own designs over the years, and have some proven, potent combinations for BBC. I can take an old set of oval ports with good parts in them and make 9 second horsepower in a stock 2-bolt block, so the heads are usually just the Icing on the cake. For the intake Manifold and heads, I have favorites that I use for different applications. If you want recipes, buy one of my engines, or have me build you one. If you want to see one, just look under the hood of one of my customers that just kicked your butt(lol)

I also sell my own design of custom roller cam that will get you there, provided you have the correct combination(that I will also help you with)---for the do it yourselfers.

Plan on spending the money only one time, though----this stuff works and the results are very predictable.

    468 ci. , oval port heads, 2-bolt Iron block, 1 x 4bbl carb, 3700 lb car, slapper bar camaro------10.67 on horsepower/9.54 @138 on spray(250 shot)

    477 ci. , Dart rectangle port heads, 2-bolt block, 1 x 4bbl carb, 3650 lb car, slapper bar camaro------10.20 @ 131mph on horsepower/ 9.30 on spray(250 shot)

477 ci. , same as above, but with #cmc99965 grind, tight nitrous convertor, and ladderbars----10.29 on horsepower/9.02 on spray.

    510 ci. , Dart heads, 2-bolt block, 1 x 4bbl carb, 3625lb car Ladder bar Camaro, 30 x 13.50 et street(30 x 11")-----9.67 @ 138 on horsepower/ 8.60's all day on a .102 Nitrous jet in a plate !!!!

Like I said before, the cams are all available with or without a combination. No "off the shelf "grind will get you near my cams.
Note there were no special parts used in the 468 and 477 engines. These engines both had stock parts in them, and stock length rods in them as well.

What would it take to run those times without nitrous, or without big RPMs? Is it realistic to consider the possibility of a 93 octane pump fuel motor running 9s?

91 GMC Syclone, full street trim, full accessories, stock bottom end.
    11.45 @ 117.7 57mm PT51 turbo at 20 PSI, 93 octane street tune w/alcohol injection. D.I.Y. Budget build, <$4500 under the hood complete.

Yes, big cubes is always the easy ticket to those times. A square rat motor would easily do that(572-----4.5 x 4.5). I could get an engine as small as my 511 or a 496 to do that, but not necessarily low rpm's. With the 511, each gear was pulled at 7600-7800. The 572 would easily do it at only 7000. Almost any rat motor you build will need to be wrapped up to at least 7000 except hydraulic cam versions. The other cost-effective option would be a brutal 632 with low compression. Anything using an aftermarket block will set you back nearly the same amount, so you might as well build the 632. The 632 will yield almost 1000 horsepower minimum regardless of the compression(minimum 11:1). This engine will be your most pump gas friendly and low-maintenance of all the engines I have mentioned----for the output-vs-dollars. The 632 you could shift at a leisurely 6500 rpm's and still run effortless 9 second times. Imagine shifting and the engine speed barely dropping----the car just goes faster !!!

    Get you one.

i know the owner of rod and competition in butler and he has i think 69 impala ss 4 door that runs in the very low 10's and high 9's at times....he even has the 4 wheel drums on it still...not sure why but.....my neighbor runs with him alot and he said he acutally wore some of his boots off from pushing down on the pedal so hard to get that beast to stop.....
