i have a 30.06 springfield model 174 pump action rifle it was made buy savage arm's.. my dad and i are redoing the wooden stock and the forearm piece. we have the stock off and the amo tube off but cant figure out how to get the forearm piece off..
have any of you guys taken one of these apart or know how to get it apart?

Im cluless, ive never seen one that attached like that. Talk to stanman, he used to work at gander mountain, he may have seen somthing like that before.

Hard to tell from looking at it but that black cap on the end of the wood should come off, either some screws or it threads on there, then the wood will slid off either forward or back. If thats not it get a closer pic of that cap end and where the wood meets the barrel.

That is what I thought, but I figured he woudl have tried that already. Im clueless on this one, mabey the ***** is glued on. Savage wasnt always known for good firearms. Then have really turned things around lately....

i'm not that big on guns but i've taken my rifle apart a few times, that does look a little odd....

Could also be screw holes filled with plugs, you can usualy find those by sanding off the clear coat or what ever is on the outside.

Another though, you said your replacing it right? Hit it with a chisle and split the wood off. should beable to do it without hurting the barrel. Then you will know how the new one goes on.

You should be able to pry it off, what ever is holding the wood on is behind it.

thanks for that link that helped out a bunch. i thikn we should be able to get it off useing that.. just gotta figure out how that plastic coller on the end comes off.


as for smashing it with a hammer i would but its my brothers gun and my grandpa gave it to him years agao and was his when he was young..

thanks again the end cap was screwed on but was rusty and lots of lock tight.. once that was off the wood came off easy

Savage actually made some nice guns back in the day. I mean the 99 is a classic, and to find one in decent shape now is almost impossible unless you have a pocket full of $$$$. Thier current center fire bolt actions are known for two things: feeling cheap, and shooting like no other!!! Serious, some of the best groups I have ever seen out a factory rifle have been out of Savages. Besides, they gave us the Accutrigger, (and all of it's knock offs) which means we can have a 1.5 lb trigger again and have it be lawyer safe!!!!


And from what I see in the pics, that gun was re-blued at some point, as if the stock looks like that, there's no way the blueing would still look that nice. What are your intentions, just re-staining the wood?? Nice little project you seem to have there on a neat old gun!!

yeah we sanded it smooth and restained the stock part 3 coats and then we are putting some type of clear on it i forget what its called but its meant for wood..
