    Whats the problem?

Hey Josh glad you made it on the board....

Josh works with me and the problem with his car is from what he told me was that when its cold it runs like crap but when warm and over 2500 rpms its fine. Am I correct J?

I heard it today and the throttle response was SLOW when you reved it and then when the rpms came down it'll back fire...

I think it might be the timing, or he needs to get the a header gasket leak fixed.

You can either use an OBD I reader...or you can use the paperclip/jumper wire method...which can be a pain in the ass but can save a few bucks.
I usually just got to any auto parts store and have them pull the codes for me. They do it for free. The harness for the scanner is under the hood on the driver side right behind the wheel well.

If there are codes...the CEL should be on...or go on and off intermittently. That's is unless the light does not work.

Is it a loud backfire....or just a pop? Does it backfire when driving under hard accel and decel...or just when revving?
I guess the best bet is to start with the easy stuff.
Have the plugs and distributor been checked (wires are run to correct cylinders too?)?

    02 sensors are good?

All vac. lines are hooked up and in good condition?

Can you hear an exhaust leak?

Usually backfires are a results of one of these things:

    Rich condition
    Timing issue
    Exhaust leak

Most of the time it's gonna be timing related....especially with the stumble/throttle response issue.

my cousin said he checked the timing and it's in between the lines, the only thing i can do is take it somewhere and get it checked out, but that will cost me an arm and a leg, if i can get someone that knows a lot about mustangs to help and maybe take a look at it, it would be much appreciated.

It dose not sound like a motor problem at all. It all most sounds like the distributor is off a few teeth. My quess would be to bring number 1 cylinder up and make shure that the roter is facing it, if not there is your problem look at the plug wires they also could be mixed up???.also fixing the things you know are problems (header gaskets) is always a start in the right direction

sounds like the distributors off a few teeth my car ran horrible cold, would only drive with the idle at 2000 rpm, and accelerated horribly until boss gt 06 came over and pulled my distributor and got it right.

Fix the exhaust leak first, and have someone check the distributor/timing, these are the first I would try. Once those are done, check things like the TPS settings, etc. Could be vacuum leak too (intake gasket?)

i think i was screwed, my engine says HO, but the firing order is set for standard 5.0, i changed to HO order, and it was misfiring like hell. this may sound dumb, but how would you fix the teeth being off without replacing the distributor?

Pull the distributor out and put it back it with #1 on TDC with roter facing #1

Im pretty sure the 5.0 HO and regular 5.0 have the same firing order. only difference with the HO is intake and maybe heads right? block should still be the same...
