usually you want about 1/8th inch gap. so when you tighten the 3 converter bolts down it pulls the converter out 1/8th of an inch away from the trans. Thats one of the crucial parts to a converter...

i believe when that code sets it puts the trans at max pressure and it will shift very very hard causing a clunking sound. I get that code every few hundred miles, as soon as i clear it shifts normal...
why not just leave the very top bolt out? 7 bolts should be plenty. i mean LT1's only use 6 and there fine.
