Putting a cam in my GTO next weekend, if anybody wants to swing buy and pitch in a hand. With the cam, or drinking beer.
Parts inventoried:
TSP Tv.2 Cam
TSP 7.400 pushrods
PAC 1518 springs
Lingenfelter "High volume" Oil pump
Timing chain
ARP Balancer bolt
ARP cam and retainer bolts (Figured what the hell)
Need to make a trip to the auto parts store for some misc crap plus a puller rental, but I'm pumped to do this job.
did you pull your front clip or is there room to get at the cam setup under that little hood? On my 6.0 it was pretty easy, but I cheated and had the motor out.
Do you have a tool to re-install the balancer? I should still have mine somewhere if you don't have one or don't want to build one.
Watch them lifters when the cam is out!
Yeah, I have a reinstall tool a buddy who used to have a cammed TA gave me. I'm told the job can be done without removing the bumper, just have to pull the rad and get the condenser out of the way.Quote:

This is probably the biggest job I've done to date, so I've done all the prep humanly possible for it. Only thing that comes close was an engine swap I did in my Isuzu Impulse back in the day, and the cam package itself is worth about as much as that whole car was. lolQuote:

And make sure you have a tool with enough oomph to get that crank bolt. If you have good pnuematics it should be bad, but because you have little clearance for an impact, make sure a good breaker and piece 'o' pipe around.
Yeah, I've got a 1/2" breaker, and I think the gas pipe I'll be picking up for us as (imagine this) gas pipe, should do the trick. I don't have my compressor moved to my house yet, but I may be picking that up thursday. I think all my sockets that are big enough are standard too, so I'll be picking up the 24mm 12 pt.Quote:

Its making more valve noise than I'm comfortable with (on startup it was hellacious until the lifters pumped up). I'm hoping its normal for a .600 lift cam, but I'm hoping to have someone who has experience take a listen tomorrow. It idles good, no oil pressure light, and I know, the cam is a lot more aggressive, it just makes me nervous and I have no context.
Well, either I was just being overly sensitive last night, or it sounds MUCH smoother today. definitely pulls well to 4000rpm, which is as high as I've taken it yet. Going to give it a couple more heat cycles before I give her hell, but VERY pleased with the results thus far, now that my mini panic attack is over.
glad it went well for you. I swear it takes these things a couple of times running before the car "gets " that it has a new cam.
Nice part is it fired right up with the tune I "borrowed" off the HPT repository, but yeah, definitely took a couple minutes for it to settle in.Quote:

From what I've heard random misfire codes aren't that common on a new cam, like you said, hopefully it stays gone. Either way, probably nothing to worry about.
It came back, but I'm really not worried about it. I'm assuming its storing it on startup, and either way I'm going to need to just take it in to get tuned correctly. I'm probably going to hold off until I have my mids, and decide if I'm going to drop the money on a FAST or not. The car is getting parked for the winter soon so it may be pushed off until spring.
I mean I guess it sounds good if you're into that kind of thing ... Which I am.
I'm just jealous that you didn't have to buy and install 4 of them :(

It smooths out quite a bit when its warm, which disappointed me a little.
I would happily trade it for a boosted mustang if you prefer the simplicty of a single cam, pre-installed. Just sayin.
